Justices Thomas and Alito are cited as refusing to recuse from matters with “financial and personal entanglements.”
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito this week. The congresswoman stated that the justices’ “pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law.”
Justice Thomas has been criticized for accepting luxury vacations and gifts. Justice Alito has come under scrutiny for the flying of a Revolutionary-era flag at his home. The flag was also seen at the Capitol protests on January 6, 2021.
It is unlikely this formal motion will come to fruition. In order to remove a Supreme Court justice from office, the House must first vote to impeach, and then the Senate must vote to convict. The House majority has expressed support for the incumbent members of the Supreme Court during respective controversies.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Representative Ocasio-Cortez as she seeks to hold the Supreme Court accountable.
- For the leadership of the House as they consider the points raised in this motion.
- For members of Congress to uphold the U.S. Constitution and respect the separation of powers as they provide federal oversight.
